Spicy and Refreshing: Tahu Tempe Penyet

If you saw my previous post about making sambal, then I will show you how to use sambal to make this amazing dish. ‘Penyet’ in Javanese means ‘crush’, so you literally crush whatever you put on your sambal – in this case, tofu (tahu in Indonesian) and tempe.

1 block of tempe

1 block of hard tofu

1 serving of sambal

1 lime

Salt to taste

Vegetable oil to fry

  1. Cut your tofu and tempe into even sizes and coat them evenly with some salt.
  2. Fry your tofu and temple in vegetable oil until crispy and golden brown.
  3. Lay them over a freshly-made serving of sambal on a mortar and crush them (pictured) and let the sambal coat your tofu and tempe.
  4. Sprinkle your penyet with lime juice, and there you have it – simple, spicy and refreshing penyet dish.
